Jeffrey D. Groves is Professor of Literature at Harvey Mudd College, one of the five undergraduate institutions in the Claremont Colleges consortium, at which he has taught for almost thirty years. His scholarly work has focused on literature and publishing in the nineteenth-century United States, with particular attention to the development of literary promotion and trade publishing. With Scott E. Casper and Joanne D. Chaison, he co-edited and contributed to Perspectives on American Book History: Artifacts and Commentary (2002). With Scott E. Casper, Stephen W. Nissenbaum, and Michael Winship, he co-edited and contributed to the third volume of A History of the Book in America: The Industrial Book, 1840-1880 (2007). Groves is the founder of The First-Floor Press, a letterpress studio in the Claremont Colleges Library in which he teaches students to print on iron hand presses. He is currently building a wooden common press modeled on the Isaiah Thomas printing press at the American Antiquarian Society. Groves attended the University of La Verne (BA) and the Claremont Graduate School (MA and PhD).
