Simone Fujita is an art librarian and archivist currently working as Bibliographer for African American Art at the Getty Research Institute. A graduate of UCLA’s MLIS program, she is passionate about critical collection development, community documentation, and the power of self-published media. Her LIS work on African American artists began as a graduate student working at UCLA Special Collections processing the Soul Publications, Inc. Records, which documents a Black-owned, Los Angeles-based print publication focused on Black artists in the music industry. Prior to her current position, Simone worked as Liaison Librarian and Outreach Coordinator at Art Center College of Design, where she acquired grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to support zine programming and the addition of student zines to the library collection. At Art Center’s Library, she also worked to actively and strategically diversify the library collection and collaborated with BIPOC students, queer students, and faculty artists on library outreach projects. In her current role as Bibliographer, Simone leads library collection development efforts for the Getty Research Institute’s African American Art History Initiative. This position enables her to expand Getty Library’s multidisciplinary print and electronic holdings on Black art and envision ways in which the Getty’s resources might serve as a complement to other existing sites for African American art research.
