Gerald W. Cloud has been professionally active in the rare book and manuscript world for nearly 20 years. He earned his PhD in literature from the University of Delaware in 2005, and published John Rodker’s Ovid Press: A Bibliographical History (2010, Oak Knoll Press). He has served as a curator and librarian at Columbia University, UCLA’s William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, and the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas, Austin; and he worked in the antiquarian book trade for James Cummins Bookseller in New York City. He has been an independent bookseller in San Francisco since 2016.
He has taught Descriptive Bibliography at California Rare Book School since 2013, and prior to that served as a lab instructor for Introduction to the Principles of Bibliographical Description at Rare Book School, University of Virginia, 2004-2010. As a Lecturer in Columbia University’s Department of English and Comparative Literature, he taught graduate courses on the History of the Book and Bibliography (2007-2011).
