California Rare Book School (CalRBS) is located on the second floor of the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS) Building on the north campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. The street address is 300 Charles E. Young Drive North, Los Angeles, CA 90095, roughly at the intersection of Royce Drive and Charles E. Young Drive North (view Google map). If you are using a mapping website or GPS for directions to UCLA generally, you may find it convenient to enter the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Hilgard Avenue as your destination, which will put you in the vicinity of the school. To locate the GSE&IS Building, consult the UCLA interactive campus map (search for “GSEIS”). Note that GSE&IS occupies two buildings on campus, the so-called GSE&IS Building, which houses the Department of Information Studies (where you're headed), and also Moore Hall, which houses the Department of Education. The GSE&IS Building is located next to Young Research Library (which houses UCLA Special Collections). Unless you happen to come across a student or faculty member in the department, chances are that your average UCLA passerby will have no idea where the GSE&IS Building is. If you get lost, ask someone to direct you to the Young Research Library and then facing the front entrance head west (i.e. left). The GSE&IS Building is tucked behind the North Campus Student Center. Once inside the building take the stairs or the elevator to the second floor.
With the exception of students enrolled in Descriptive Bibliography, all students should plan to arrive at GSE&IS Building no later than 8:30 am on the day classes begin. If you are driving to campus, allow extra time to find parking and walk to the GSE&IS building. Classes will begin promptly at 9 am. Students enrolled in Descriptive Bibliography should arrive at 8:30 am at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, located at 2520 Cimarron Street in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles (view Google map). The Descriptive Bibliography class will be taught in the main library building. (It’s the identifiably pretty one on the south side of the property).
Parking at UCLA
UCLA allows visitors to purchase short-term parking for certain parking lots. Consult the UCLA Transportation & Parking website for more information. Note that you may not be able to purchase a parking pass at the lot itself; some lots require you to first visit an information kiosk.
A local area map displays the GSE&IS Building, Moore Hall, and nearby parking lots and information kiosks where parking passes may be obtained. The closest information kiosk is on Westwood Plaza off of Sunset Boulevard. The closest parking lots to the GSE&IS Building are Lots 3 and 5. There are self-service parking pay stations in the north garage of Lot 3 (the entrance to the north garage is located immediately as you enter the UCLA campus from Hilgard Avenue). Although there are many entrances to lot 3 (sometimes with or without a gate), they are reserved for UCLA permit holders. Once you enter the north garage, locate the “Pay by Space” parking area. Pay stations allow you to select the time you need to spend on campus and pay accordingly (all-day passes can also be purchased). Parking pay stations accept $1 and $5 dollar bills, as well as VISA, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards. Note that you may only park on levels 1, 2, 3, and 6 in Lot 5, and you need to exit and re-enter the garage to access each level. Do not park in spaces labeled “Blue Permit Only.”
If you intend to drive each day and park, leave ample time on the first day to find parking and familiarize yourself with the geography. For students enrolled in the Descriptive Bibliography class, ample parking is available at the Clark.
Flight Transportation to Los Angeles
If flying into Los Angeles, there are two airports to choose from: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Burbank Airport (BUR). Depending on your departure city, various major and discount airlines fly to and from these cities, so it is worth checking both airports for the cheapest flights; however, bear in mind, the cheapest flight may not turn out to be the most convenient. Distances in Los Angeles are deceptive: a four or five mile trip may turn out to take 45 minutes, depending on traffic. If you are staying with friends in Los Angeles, consult their better wisdom for advice on which airport to fly into. For information about airlines that service these airports, ground transportation, etc., visit the airports’ websites.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located on the west side of Los Angeles just south of Marina del Rey. If you are staying in the western beach cities, Beverly Hills, or at UCLA. LAX is probably your best bet, especially if you are traveling alone and/or not staying with a local. The time you would save getting in and out of another local airport, you would lose sitting on the freeway, so you might as well take advantage of the multitude of flights that come into LAX from all over the world. Bear in mind that when departing from LAX you should plan extra time to check in and go through security, especially if you are checking bags. Most airlines have a strict time cut-off policy for checked luggage. If you arrive after this time, you will have to wait for another flight. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, a ticketing agent is usually able to reroute you fairly quickly.
Burbank Airport (BUR) is north of the City. It is a much smaller airport so it is faster to get in and out of. It is the most convenient airport to fly into if you’re planning to stay near Universal Studios or Six Flags Magic Mountain. It’s also convenient if you’re staying in Hollywood or downtown. Because of the limited flights available at BUR, we generally do not recommend flying into BUR if you are coming from longer distances, e.g. the East Coast or abroad. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, you will have a much harder time rerouting your flights. In some cases, an alternate flight may only be available from LAX. Cab fare between BUR and LAX is about $90 one way.
